50 million people in the United States are age 65 and older, and this number is expected to increase to 60 million in the next 5 years. According to AARP, 90% of this population will be staying in their home rather than moving to long-term or nursing home facilities. This is termed “aging in place.”
Financially, the cost of in-home care is almost 75% less than the cost for nursing home care. But, studies also show that almost everything healthcare related is better for those who stay home. They stay healthier, respond better to health care treatments, and heal faster if they become ill. And, they are happier.
But, with this trend comes opportunities and responsibilities for those in a care-giver role, whether family or for-hire services.
Most home health care services will do a “home assessment” to determine if there are changes or additions to the home that would make the home more compatible with the aging-in-place approach. A key question during this assessment should be “Are utility backup systems in place for the home?”
Our aging family members and friends are particularly susceptible to dehydration, which can hit quickly, hit hard, and have lasting effects. Water, not only for hydration, but sanitation as well, is critical to a successful aging-in-place strategy.
Constant Water can provide that critical backup water function for our aging-in-place loved ones — both for those on water wells and those on public water systems; and can do so for conditions that generators can’t. Having a Constant Water system in place assures the homeowner and the care giver of an emergency supply of water to every sink, shower and toilet in the home. It activates automatically with the loss of power to the well pump and can also be manually activated, without ever leaving the home, for loss of public water or well pump failure.
Do you have loved ones, dear friends, or respected customers who are aging in place or plan to age in place? Talk with them about adding a Constant Water system in their home. Peace of mind is a tremendous comfort for you and them.
