California Earthquakes Hit With No Warnings

Ridgecrest Quake and San Andreas Fault
Low Damage, But No Warning

California earthquakes are common.  Spanning 730 miles through California, the San Andreas fault periodically hints at its destructive power. While the early-July Ridgecrest-area quake left relatively light damage in its wake, tremors were felt more than 100 miles away and triggered thousands of aftershocks. However, they don’t come with warnings.

Warnings are provided for most disasters

Tornadoes, hurricanes, snow and ice storms are all accompanied with breathless forecasters beating the “prepare now” drums.

Meteorologist struggle with touchscreen monitors to display the projected storm paths festooned with graphics and off-key sound effects.  Gas lines form, store shelves are emptied, and travel by any means is shamed.

Preparatory panic is expected, condoned and approved.

When the storm hits, these same reporters find the deepest water puddle to stand in (with an umbrella), lean against non-existent wind gusts, and pronounce traffic crippled by dusting of snow.

No Earthquake Warning

But, unlike many other natural disasters, earthquakes are California Earthquake Ridgecrest CAunique in their absence of a warning—they just happen. California earthquake damage receives the same high-volume, noisy, flashy-graphic, post-quake treatment, but there are no preparatory chyrons or clarion calls.
