Preparing for a 4th consecutive drought seasons, the Metropolitan Water District’s (MWD) board declared a Regional Drought Emergency for residents in Southern California due to drought conditions. This declaration urges residents to cut back on water use and called for water agencies to immediately reduce their use of all imported water supplies due to the ongoing drought crisis.
On average, the MWD imports about half of the water used from the State Water Project (SWP), which uses water from the Southern California area and the northern Sierra. According to the news release, some communities rely mostly on imported water while others have little use for it.
Cutbacks May Be Mandated
The MWD’s board of directors warned that the call for water-saving measures could become mandatory if drought conditions in the area worsen in the coming months.

MDW General Manager Adel Hagekhalil said the WMD has been steadily calling for increased water conservation measures due to drought conditions. Hagekhalil believes if they don’t have an extremely wet winter, they will have to elevate to their highest level and begin allocating water for all of southern California. Substantial and immediate conservation now and in the coming months will help lessen the potential severity of such an allocation,” Hagekhalil said in a statement.
Drought conditions and excessive heat have already strained the nations’ power grid. Electrical power demands already strain much of the grid due to high heat and drought conditions in the west and mid-west. Harsh winter weather may exacerbate the problem.
